Meditation can reduce inflammation

MeditationMeditation not only calms the mind, it  can actually cause molecular changes in the body which can reduce inflammation and help faster physical recovery from a stressful situation.

Mindfulness based trainings have shown beneficial effects on inflammatory disorders and are endorsed by the American Heart Association as a preventative measure.

Trinity psychiatrist links 20pc of physical illness to mental stress

A Trinity professor of psychiatry has linked mental stress to 20pc of all physical illness, which patients present to doctors.

“We have discovered that many common physiological symptoms such as muscle aches, joint pains, headaches, chronic fatigue and even dental pain can be caused or part caused by mental health problems,” says Prof Jim Lucey.

Prof  Lucey, who is Professor of Clinical Psychology at Trinity College, Dublin,  believes that in many cases inexpensive treatments like “mindfulness training which typically costs a few euros an hour ” could help.

Sounds good for surgery

A soothing sound played for patients having eye surgery reduced fear and anxiety and slowed heart rates.

The audio therapy – known as binaural beats – was used during cataract surgery where patients are only given a local anaesthetic and exposed to potentially upsetting sounds like surgical machinery and the conversations of the surgical team.
