A Trinity professor of psychiatry has linked mental stress to 20pc of all physical illness, which patients present to doctors.

“We have discovered that many common physiological symptoms such as muscle aches, joint pains, headaches, chronic fatigue and even dental pain can be caused or part caused by mental health problems,” says Prof Jim Lucey.

Prof  Lucey, who is Professor of Clinical Psychology at Trinity College, Dublin,  believes that in many cases inexpensive treatments like “mindfulness training which typically costs a few euros an hour ” could help.
