Immune system could hold key to weight loss

It could be responsible for as much as 40pc of your body’s ability to regulate weight.

The team of researchers who made this ground breaking discovery includes Prof Donal O’ Shea, consultant endocrinologist at St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin and Dr Lydia Lynch, associate professor at Trinity College Dublin.

Fishy solution for depression

Depression affects an estimated 350million people across the world and it is projected to become the second leading cause of ill health by 2020.

A pooling of data from 26 studies involving over 150,000 participants found a 17pc reduction in the risk of depression for those eating the most fish.

Cocoa flavanols improve cardiovascular function and so lessen the burden on the heart that comes with ageing and stiffening of the arteries.

The flavanols also reduce the risk of developing heart disease, the world’s number one killer.

Beat diabetes with eggs

EggEating eggs reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Eggs have been found to improve glucose balance and have been linked to a lower risk of type 2 diabetes and lower blood glucose levels.

Men in the study who ate four eggs a week had a 37pc lower risk of type 2 diabetes than those who only ate one egg a week.
