Family doctors need to embrace all forms of alternative medicine and “have a holistic approach” says Donegal GP Dr Austin O’Kennedy.
The Donegal GP also had words of advice for those suffering emotional from the negative messages around the economy “do not let fear into your hearts”.
Doctors “need to break free from our conventional attachments that conventional medicine is the only way and complementary medicine is wrong or vice-versa” he told a gathering at the Sláinte Natural Health Centre in Mill Row in Donegal town..
“We need to work together for the benefit of our patients and not have our egos dictate than ‘only I can help.”
Dr O’Kennedy felt that as practitioners “we need to open the channels of healing and realize the mind and body are totally linked” and to develop a philosophy of health “that embraces all traditions.
“In other words, we need to have a holistic approach to medicine”.
Referring to the stress caused by the state of the economy he invited people to “take courage and trust in yourselves and in your ability to transcend worry and stress.
Pointing out that life’s cycles have always been up and down he said:
“We must learn from our mistakes, stop blaming and trust in the inherent greatness of all of us, because we are all made in God’s likeness.”
“One of my favourite books is a book by Wayne Dyer, it is called The Ten Secrets of Success and Inner Peace.
“His first principal is to have a mind that is open to everything and attached to nothing. The Dalai Lama calls it a “supple quality of mind”.
“What they mean is that we banish ego in our approach to medicine and welcome and embrace all alternative and complementary medicine that will help our patients and that is, undoubtedly what we are all about, helping patients to have a better quality of life, both physically and emotionally,” he added.
The Sláinte Centre offers a range of therapies from Bowen Therapy and Homeopathy to Hypnosis, Hypnotherapy, Physiotherapy, Reflexology, Massage and Reiki.
